Vegetable Crops - Weekly update

Last modified 2008-07-15 09:31

In season information about what is happening in the fields.

Wayne County IPM weekly vegetable crop report - 7/14/2008

  • Cole Crops - Both cabbage worm and flea beetle counts down this week.

  • Sweet corn -   Threshold levels of corn borer (50%)  are being found in early plantings.  Corn borer and earworm counts are both at 0 per trap.  Silking sweet corn should still be on a 5 day schedule for corn borer control if live larvae are being found around the ear.

  • Vine Crops - Cucumber beetle populations are going up.  Mostly in the blossoms of squash and pumpkins.  Anthracnose, angular leaf spot, alternaria and target spot are showing up in most plantings. Downy mildew found as close as Geauga County, Ohio, click here for more information.

  • Tomatoes - Timber rot, early blight and bacterial speck are being found.  We are recommending that all field tomato growers start a preventative spray schedule for early blight.

  • Peppers - Very light aphid infestations present.  Some pods found with cornborer larvae inside.

  • Onions - Thrip populations below threshold.  We are also noticing a tiny red mite feeding on some of the thrips.  Last year this mite kept thrip populations to low levels in several fields.

  • Eggplant - Potato beetles and flea beetles are causing light to moderate damage.

  • Beans - Bean leaf beetles and leafhoppers are being found in low numbers.
