The Saal family dairy farm, known as Sterling Heights Dairy, began in 1957 with the purchase of an 80 acre farm. In 1999, the farm expanded from 90 to 250 cows as sons Matt and Mark returned to the farm after college. Since that time the farm has continued to grow and currently the farm operation includes 500 cows milked 3x/day, 500 heifers and calves, and 800 acres of crops. In addition to family members, the farm has 9 employees that play a vital role in keeping the farm running and moving forward.
Tour participants will be able to take a guided wagon tour of the dairy operation and family members and/or farm employees will be on hand to explain various aspects and features of the dairy operation. One management practice that will be highlighted includes fly control.
As always, tour sponsors will be on hand with displays and exhibits featuring farm services, equipment, machinery, seed, supplies and finance.
