Private Pesticide Applicator License Recertification 2017

I have had some questions about private pesticide license recertification meetings. OSU Extension Wayne and Holmes Counties will again be collaborating to provide private applicator pesticide recertification and fertilizer certification in 2017.   Every year there are questions about the cost of the recertification program and the license renewal fee. There is a $35 charge for recertification training.  This is in addition to the $30 that gets sent in to ODA for license renewal.

Pre-registration, including sending in your $35 pesticide recertification fee, is encouraged to help get you through the sign-in process quicker and to allow us to better plan for number of handout materials.  Pre-register by contacting the Wayne County Extension office at 330-264-8722 and providing your name, address and phone number.  Applicators are encouraged to arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the advertised program starting time, to allow for sign-in and picking up handout materials.  Please remember to bring your pesticide license with you to the training session.  You will need it to fill out the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) form.

Private pesticide applicator recertification training is scheduled on the following dates and at the following locations:

  • Thursday, January 26:  As a part of Shearer Equipment John Deere Day; 9:00 am - Noon at Shisler Conference Center, OARDC in Wooster, sponsored by Shearer Equipment John Deere.  Training will be provided in Core and categories 1, 2, and 6.

Fertilizer Applicator Certification

Fertilizer certification is needed if you apply commercial fertilizer (not manure) to more than 50 acres.  Fertilizer applied through the planter box as a starter fertilizer is not included in this requirement.  The certification requirement is for both private and commercial applicators of fertilizer (not manure).

I am encouraging farm operations to make sure that the next generation gets their fertilizer certification.  Additionally, Extension educators have been told that after the 2017 year, the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) is considering going to a test option to certify new applicators.  As it stands now, attending a 2 or 3 hour training without a test is what is required to become certified.

Anyone who has a pesticide applicator license (private or commercial) needs to attend a minimum of a 2 hour fertilizer certification training. Applicators may also attend a 3 hour program to get certified. There is no additional fee to get the fertilizer certification for anyone who already has a pesticide applicator license.

Anyone who needs fertilizer certification that does NOT have a pesticide applicators license will need to attend a 3 hour fertilizer certification training, AND pay $30 to ODA for the fertilizer applicator certification.

Wayne and Holmes County Extension have the following fertilizer certification training sessions scheduled:

2-Hour Certification (Must already have a pesticide applicators license)
