Drift and Inversion Workshop

What is the ideal condition under which to make an herbicide application to minimize the possibility of drift?  Certainly, high wind speeds can cause drift issues and move herbicide off target.  Should the goal be to spray herbicide during those times when it is calm, with no wind?  It turns out, that some wind movement is desired to make a good herbicide application and to minimize drift.  Calm conditions can mean that an inversion is present.  An inversion is a weather situation that allows spray droplets to remain suspended in the air and can lead to those droplets traveling considerable distances when that inversion begins to break up.

The Ohio IPM program is sponsoring an Inversion and Drift Mitigation Workshop on April 10 from 10:00 am until noon.  This workshop is available in a webinar format to allow interested pesticide applicators to attend the workshop virtually.  Topics that will be covered in the workshop include:

  • Understanding Inversions and Weather Conditions by Aaron Wilson, OSU Extension Weather Specialist and Atmospheric Scientist
  • Using Tools for Applications in the Ohio Sensitive Crop Registry (recently merged with FieldWatch) by Jared Shaffer, Plant Health Inspector, Ohio Department of Agriculture.

There is no cost to attend the workshop but pre-registration is required to attend.  Registrants will receive a link to the workshop.  Register at go.osu.edu/IPM.
