  1. Vegetable Growers: Disease Alert

    Jul. 16, 2015

I’ll continue to beat the drum of weather woes with this topic.  Commercial vegetable production is another important component of the Wayne County agricultural economy.  This is turning into a very challenging year for vegetable growers as the wet conditions have allowed some serious fungal diseases to develop.  In early July downy mildew was confirmed in Wayne County.  Downy mildew is a potentially devastating disease of cucurbit crops, but especially cucumbers and cantaloupe.  Pumpkins, squash and watermelon are at less risk of severe damage from downy mildew.

  2. Grey Leafspot on Corn

    Jul. 16, 2015

Wayne County Extension IPM crop scouts are noting high incidences of grey leaf spot (GLS) in some corn fields in the area.   While northern corn leaf blight (NCLB), another corn foliar disease, has not yet been noted on our scouting reports, other areas of the state are seeing northern corn leaf blight in fields and it would not surprise me to see it in our area as well.  Both grey leaf spot and northern corn leaf blight are fungal diseases and of course what is driving the appearance of these diseases is our wet weather.  Combined with wet conditions, each disease has a preferred...

  3. Stay Cool In The Kitchen

    Jul. 16, 2015

During these hot summer days, it’s sometimes a challenge to find ways to prepare a quick nutritious meal without heating up the kitchen.   Planning your main meal for the week will help not only save you time, it will save money by purchasing everything you need for a week at a time without needing to stop at the grocery to pick up one or two items.  Another way to save time is to use the appliances to help with the cooking process.  Here are a few ideas you might like to try:

  6. Wheat Harvest Concerns

    Jul. 02, 2015

Our recent rainy weather combined with saturated soils is going to delay harvest of wheat harvest.  In a recent OSU Extension crop newsletter, OSU Extension specialists Pierce Paul and Laura Lindsey outline some of the possible problems this can cause.  Late harvest coupled with excessive rainfall mean more time for late-season mold growth, mycotoxin accumulation, test weight reduction, and sprouting, all of which collectively could result in poor overall grain quality.

  7. Fly Control Around Livestock Facilities

    Jul. 02, 2015

Flies are one of the major nuisances around livestock facilities.  They are a particular problem during the summer and fall when temperatures work in favor of their reproductive cyle.  Flies can negatively affect animal performance, causing reduced feeding and resting time which can result in reduced weight gains and reduced milk production.  Flies can also vector some diseases.  For all of these reasons, livestock owners and managers need to make an effort to control flies.  A few weeks ago in the OSU Extension Beef Cattle letter, Steve Boyles OSU Extension Beef Specialist had a good...

  9. I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream!

    Jun. 29, 2015

As we close the month it’s a great time to celebrate June as Dairy month.  I know, many of you know,  Wayne County is the number one dairy county in the state of Ohio and according to the 2010 census we are ranked 11th in the nation.  As you travel or have dinner, talk about how many different breeds of dairy cattle you might name and what they look like?

  10. Scout for Soybean Diseases

    Jun. 29, 2015

This past week Wayne County IPM scouts noted increased incidence of leaf diseases in soybean fields.  Most of this can be attributed to our rainy weather.  According to Anne Dorrance, OSU Extension soybean pathologist, foliar pathogens have the most impact on soybeans at the later growth stages (R3 to R6) by reducing the photosynthetic area of the leaves that contribute to pod development and seed growth.  So, does this mean you should go out and spray a fungicide?  The best defense against disease remains planting varieties that have a good disease resistance package, but that does not...
