During some of the fertilizer applicator certification meetings this past winter I had some questions about the use of nitrogen inhibitors. As we begin our 2015 corn planting season an appropriate question might be; should you consider the use of a nitrogen inhibitor? The reason we have this discussion is because nitrogen can be lost by leaching through the soil profile, through ammonia volatilization or through denitrification. To understand those losses and when they occur we have to know a little about nitrogen and soil chemistry and how our crop plants absorb nitrogen.

Have you ever had “just one of those days?” The kind of day that makes you want to sit in your favorite chair at the end of the day curled up with a good book and forget the rest of the world and the obligations that await? We live in a busy world. Our family, job, community and even the things we usually enjoy can sometimes take a toll on our emotional health and we find ourselves overwhelmed and sometimes even depressed. Everyone has ways to cope with the stress in our lives, some that may be more beneficial than others. For me… I need a good night’s sleep and a day that begins...

New for 2015 – the Jr. Fair Liaison Committee and Sr. Fair Board have discussed and decided to create a Champion’s Row. Overall Grand and Reserve Champion Market Goats, Hogs, Lambs, and Beef Cattle will be housed together in the Champion’s Row! The project book format for 4-H beef, goat, cavies, dairy, pocket pets, dog, rabbit, sheep and swine members includes a resource handbook that needs to be purchased once every five or more years, and a Project and Record Book that needs to be purchased and completed every year that the respective project is taken.
If you prefer to keep computerized records, you may attach your print-outs where appropriate. You will still need to fill out the project/record book as stated. These computerized records are not in place of the record book.

Once we get past this recent stretch of rainy weather and fields dry out, it will be full bore into the planting season. Cover crop termination will be needed on some fields. Factors that influence the effectiveness of herbicides as a termination option include temperature and crop growth stage. Temperature is particularly important when using herbicides that need to be translocated within the plant because plants should be actively growing for this to occur.

Farmers are extremely proud of the work they do to bring food, fuel and fiber to market. But while productivity, science and technology have seen great strides in recent decades, our ability to communicate about farming to the general public has not made similar advances. To help address this communication gap to the public. Crawford and Richland County Farm Bureau are pleased to annouce the 2015 Ag Literacy Challenge.
