  1. Grass Tetany Prevention

    As pastures and small grain fields begin to green up, and livestock owners make plans to begin early spring grazing passes, keep in mind the risk of grass tetany.  Grass tetany is caused by low blood magnesium (Mg) level.  Magnesium is one of the macro minerals required by animals and it is involved in crucial metabolic functions such as the transmission of nerve impulses and muscle contraction.  About 70% of the total body content of magnesium is stored in bones and teeth and adequate blood levels of magnesium are dependent upon daily magnesium intake.

    Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you!  I love to think of green in the spring… the grass turning green, the trees budding green and maybe for many, a tax refund?   According to the Internal Revenue Service about 40 million tax refunds have been issued with an average refund amount of $3,120.  If you are receiving a refund have you made plans as to how you might use it?  A tax refund is a great opportunity to pay down debt, build your emergency savings fund or save for your financial goals.

  6. New 4-H Volunteer Orientation and Required Advisor Training Update

    Nearly 300 4-H Advisors / Volunteers completed the new required training sessions on Recognizing and Reporting the Signs of Child Abuse and Neglect that our office offered in February!  To assist those who were unable to attend in February we are offering three more opportunities to complete this state-required training.

  8. Help Wanted: Summer 4-H Assistant Position Now Available

    The Wayne County Extension Office is planning to hire a Summer 4-H Assistant / Intern.  This position will be a temporary full-time position running from Mid-May to Mid-August.  The successful candidate will assist the office in planning, preparing, and conducting summer 4-H events and programs including but not limited to Cloverbud Day Camp, Junior Camp, Teen Camp, Skillathons, and Project Judgings.  The summer assistant will also assist with various office projects and preparations for the 2015 Wayne County Jr. Fair.
