The 2015 Ohio Sheep and Goat School will be offered as a webinar series throughout the state. The webinar series is sponsored by OSU Extension and the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association (OSIA). Wayne County will once again be a host site for the school with additional sponsorship from the Ohio Heartland Sheep Improvement Association (OHSIA).

One strategy for small scale beef producers to increase income per head is to sell beef directly to the consumer. This marketing strategy is often termed freezer beef. Perhaps the easiest way to sell freezer beef is to use a processing facility that is fully inspected in order to sell the meat to the consumer. In this case the buyer of the beef has to go directly to that processor to pick up their meat. No license is required to sell meat directly with this method. Winter weather results in higher energy requirements for livestock. In the case of ruminant livestock a major portion of the diet is typically composed of forages. Forage nutrient content is affected by a number of factors, the major one being maturity at harvest, but also species composition, moisture content at harvest, and handling of the forage during the harvest and storage period. While most of our grain crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, oats and barley have a fairly consistent quality and a narrow range of quality variance, forages can vary widely in nutritional quality. The Molly Caren Agricultural Center near London, Ohio is home to the Farm Science Review (FSR), which attracts more than 140,000 visitors from all over the United States and Canada, who come for three days to peruse 4,000 product lines from 600 commercial exhibitors and learn the latest in agricultural production. The educational programs feature Ohio State and Purdue specialists and are second to none in the agricultural exhibition world.
