    Nov. 06, 2015

We’ve had a beautiful fall and I hope you were able to enjoy your favorite activities with family and friends.  As the holidays approach, it seems life becomes a little more hectic with the added opportunities.  Talk about the things that are really important in your family and then use some of the ideas below to work them into your schedule.  Some of these are work-related and some for the home, but the underlying time management principles can be used in most situations.

  2. Make Plans to Attend the Annual Buckeye Shepherds Symposium

    Nov. 06, 2015

Anyone with an interest in sheep or goat production should plan to attend the Buckeye Shepherds Symposium (BSS) scheduled for December 12 at the Shisler Conference Center on the OARDC campus in Wooster.   This year’s program includes topics that will benefit both new and beginning shepherds as well as experienced shepherds.  The 2015 Buckeye Shepherd’s Symposiums theme is “Profitability, Productivity, Nutrition, and Sheep Farm Succession Planning Principles”.  The symposium will concentrate on several topics related to the success of the sheep operation both now and in the future.

  3. Become a 4-H Volunteer Today

    Nov. 05, 2015

More than 1,500 youth in Wayne County participate in 4-H clubs, projects, camps, and other activities throughout the year.  Approximately 400 caring adults volunteer their time and talents to help our youth grow into contributing citizens.

There are many different ways to get involved as a 4-H volunteer. 4-H volunteers can choose how involved and active they want to be from a variety of roles and functions.  Here are just a few examples:

  4. EPA Proposes Big Changes to Pesticide Applicator Certification and Training

    Nov. 05, 2015

As pesticide applicators and educators around the country become aware of proposed changes by the EPA to pesticide applicator certification and recertification training requirements, there is concern that the increased requirements will break the training systems in place and unintentionally result in decreased pesticide safety.   Recently Dr. Mary Ann (Mimi) Rose, coordinator of the OSU Extension pesticide safety education program, provided the following brief synopsis of the proposed rule changes:

  6. An Apple a Day...

    Oct. 23, 2015

As October draws to a close, the beautiful fall weather has been wonderful to enjoy some trail riding.  What’s your favorite fall activity?  I hope that you and your family or friends can make time to create special memories!  This time of year, there is an abundance of apples and the aroma of your favorite apple pie or cobbler can entice your family into the kitchen!  How do you make sure they are safe for your family? Here are a few tips to remember when enjoying your next crisp and juicy apple:

  7. Fall Weed Control

    Oct. 23, 2015

Our run of nice fall weather has contributed to an earlier harvest season and is providing a window of opportunity to apply herbicides for fall weed control.  As long as we are getting temperatures above 50F fall weed control can be very effective.  From an agronomic standpoint fall weed control is often stressed as a crucial step in controlling marestail in fields that will be planted to soybeans.

  8. Calf Behavior and Bedding Materials

    Oct. 23, 2015

Young dairy calves spend a lot of their day lying down.  Research from the University of Guelph says that calves from 10 days of age to 4 weeks can average 20.6 hours per day lying down over that period.  Calf lying down time will average 18 hours/day from 30 to 39 days of age, 17 hours/day from 40-49 days of age and 16 hour/day from 50 to 56 days of age.

  9. Consider Temperament When Making Culling Decisions

    Oct. 23, 2015

Over the years, as I have worked with beef cattle owners I have asked them where temperament ranks as they make culling decisions and decide which animals and genetics to keep in the herd.  I have heard replies ranging from “It’s a factor, something I keep in mind” to “It’s one of the top 3 factors in my decision”.  I recently read an article in Drovers Cattlenetwork on-line by Glenn Selk, Department of Animal Science at Oklahoma State University, in which he presented the results of a couple of studies showing that wild and/or excitable cattle negatively affect profit in the cattle...

  10. Preparing Varieties of Squash

    Oct. 19, 2015

The fall season is here, the beautiful hillsides, the crisp air and of course football season.  It’s a time when I also enjoy spending a little more time in the kitchen because of the short daylight after work.  As I passed by a display of winter squash last week, I overheard the comment “I’d really like to know how to cook this squash?”  and after our conversation I’m guessing this may be something that many of us may wonder.  I have tried several kinds, but I’m sure there are many additional methods others may share, so ask at work or with friends and find out what their favorite method...
